okay okay okay... we hate telling you what to do... so we'll just suggest you come hang out with us on SEPTEMBER 27, 2008 at the copper rocket.

so here's what we've done... we've managed to talk the nice people at the copper rocket to let us throw an 18+ show, and to also have $1 beer all fracking night. sure, it's a $5 cover... but after that - oh man... you're good to go.

so of course all of our little orlando-based orphans will be playing...

but also...

Christopher Stelling will be flying in from some place called New York to play a set. His only Florida appearance of 2008! And we will have the very first copies of his new album available for sale, you old rascals.

We are very proud and excited to announce the newest member to our Orphanage - Mr. Darin Hughes. You may recognize Darin as either A) the space age guitar player from our favorite intergalactic party band Happy Valley, B) our resident genius audio master, C) that time he won that nicest bestest all around great dude award in 2007...

oh yeah, so apparently he was keeping his solo project secret from us - because someone else played it for us and we were like - "saaaaayyyy whhaaaat???" srrrrsly. but after several long hours of negotiations - seven, count them, seven hugs - and a contract that involves a tsunami clause - we will be bringing you a brand new darin hughes solo album early on in 2009.

The young men of Happy Valley have finished their new record MUTANTEN and fracking frack it's totally sweet. It is about mutants, like space mutants or something... or life mutants maybe? I've never been too good at identifying types of mutants - the one's with the red markings on their necks are space mutants - is that right?

Anyhow... 14 songs of crazy space race madness. Wrapped up and handed to you August 5th. But here's a secret... lean in... are you listening?

Crutch and the Giant Junshi is one Nicholas Sprysenski. Nicholas was the first to arrive at our humble little home for birds. Some people don't believe the many stories we tell about him. We've seen him rescue an otter from a poacher, juggle fire swords, and read to little babies at the little baby library.

What is wonderful though, is that he makes music as fantastic and adventurous as any of those things.

Someone might have said it sounds like Tom Waits... in a canoe... with a tiger.

Might have. You don't know.

Seriously... they might have...

Prove they didn't.

Go ahead. Prove it.

Our most migratory orphan, Christopher Stelling sends the Orphanage post cards from all over the globe. He also sends us songs, and these weird little statues of horses.

We're not sure why.

I mean, we never said we especially liked horses.

In fact, we don't especially like horses. At least not enough to warrant a collection of miniatures.

As for the music, we dare you to listen to it and not think Christopher was born with 40 fingers and a guitar in his hand. Double dog dare in your underwear. Perm your hair at the county fair dare.

If they ever discover a river on another planet... this is what it is going to sound like. Christopher may have already been there to check it out, sent us a postcard, and we just don't know yet.

We consulted our Fedex tracking guide, but the light year conversion chart was confusing. Stupid Fedex.

Happy Valley showed up on the doorstep of the orphanage, not in tattered rags with dirt on their little faces - but in space suits with laser cannons and complex math books. Needless to say, we took them in before someone saw them and like, totally freaked out or something.

They were all like, "Hey we're totally from outerspace."
And we were all like, "Whatevs. You got any cookies?"
And they did.

Space cookies.

Crutch & the Giant Junshi - totally famous now

Everyone. Stop what you are doing and read this review of our little orphan's new record Caterwaul. Unless of course you are already reading the review, in which case, carry on.

Some highlights:

No, but seriously... check this out:
"

The wrenching yet literary songs on Caterwaul are lush with narrative power and meticulous detail. Sprysenski’s septic imagery is lovingly, artfully rendered in what he aptly calls “gutter romanticism.” His crooked rasp evokes Tom Waits. Neutral Milk Hotel can be heard in the delicate, unexpected instrumental gestures. His impassioned delivery is rooted in a true kind of emo, like Sunny Day Real Estate or the Promise Ring.

But the congress of these things, along with his outsider’s point of view, is an experimental folk that rattles and shivers.

The songs take quixotic turns, and Sprysenski’s singing can go from whiskeyed storytelling to childish rumination to madman outbursts (“Chicken Legs”). The music is unconventional but never awkward, as he demonstrates a keen sense of melody (“Berlin”).

The result is an odd sort of beautiful, and Caterwaul is a work that marks Sprysenski as one of the city’s most visceral songwriters. In a moon where style and sheen is the order of the day, his intensely direct viewpoint punches through the dulling white noise like knife-cold water to the face.

Sprysenski sees the power and poetry in that most human of qualities: imperfection. It’s a concept that both his life and his art harness and celebrate in true flagellant form."
